Sher Fiction Taking the Train by J. C. Smedley Exhibition by J. A. Crawford Features and Articles Conference on Women in the Arts by Barbara Entman (2 photos by Barbara Entman—crowd at Albany YWCA awaiting Audre Lorde's poetry reading and Audre Lorde). Audre Lorde's keynote address and reading are the high points of "Womanworks: A Conference of Women in the Arts," October 5–7 in Albany, New York. National and local professionals examine and celebrate women's achievements in the arts with discussions, workshops, lectures, and readings. Thaddeus East's "Work in Progress" (1 self portrait of artist). Phantasm's featured artist also enjoys playing music and woodworking. His approach to art is outlined in three progressive steps. Senses of Self by Cynthia Edelberg (4 photos of Cynthia Edelberg, Robert Creely by Cynthia Edelberg, Warren Tallman, and Robert Duncan by Cynthia Edelberg). At the Modern Language Association convention December 29, 1979, in San Francisco Robert Creely, Warren Tallman, and Robert Duncan address the issue of "self" as they record it. No Suppression Here? by John Beecher (1 high contrast rendition of Beecher). Poet activist John Beecher tells how Macmillian avoids advertising his book Collected Poems: 1924–1974, tells the author untruths about promoting it, and won't meet with the author after it's published. This leads to the conclusion that despite national reviews highly rating the book, the publisher has suppressed it. CCLM Seminar: "A Meeting of Editor and Writers" by Larry S. Jackson (10 photos by author of Lachlan McDonald, Sasha Newborn, Helene Mochedlover, Richard Morris, Ellen Ferber, Glenna Luschei and David Wilk, John McKenna, Len Fulton and Zachary Feuer, Charlotte Cusay and Roland Grybauskas, Dennis Cooper, Jacqueline de Angeles and Aleida Rodriguez). A two-day conference for publishers in Venice, California, centers on publishers' concerns and resolving issues. A panel of experts disseminate information concluding with a reading by Kay Boyle and live music. Subsidy Presses Answer Their Critics by I. S. Justesen. Insu Justesen exclusively investigates twelve subsidy houses for Phantasm and reports her findings. Artwork J. Thaddeus East (16) Book Review as if it will matter by Jody Alieson (Seal Press, Seattle). Reviewed by Richard Flanagan, "Jody Alieson's as if it will matter." Poet's second book (printed from handset type by Barbara Wilson and Rachel da Silva) remains true to Alieson's highly-reviewed first title of poems, Soul Claiming. Guest Columnist Distributing Small Press Titles by Jim Sitter, owner of Bookslinger, distributor for 225 small presses and 140 literary magazines (1 photo of Jim Sitter). Jim Sitter explains his role as distributor and how he sees the small presses filling the gap large conglomerate-owned publishers cannot fill. Editorial Independence "Relates" to Profit by Larry S. Jackson, editor and publisher. To support writers independent literary magazines have to earn money. When this concept was discussed at the Coordinating Council for Literary Magazines conference in Venice, California, the speaker was forced to stop speaking by those who "couldn't relate." Phantasm was not among those narrow-minded fools. Announcements 68 national announcements of literary events |
